Biomimetic peptides in cosmetics

August 18, 2019

Intense technological development in aesthetic medicine and cosmetology has caused an ever-increasing demand for the introduction of substances that activate the natural mechanisms of the skin. Peptides are one of these substances, which stimulate the natural repair and regeneration mechanisms of our body and can even help in whitening of the skin.

The role of peptides in the skin

Natural peptides participate in many processes occurring in the human body – some of them maintain homeostasis, the internal balance within the body (e.g. insulin), other can function as antioxidants or detoxicants.

Peptides in our skin serve the function of cell relays in the skin, they are involved in the intracellular communication and they stimulate the activation of enzymes and hormones responsible for cellular processes.

They are organic chemical compounds created through the combination of two or more amino acid molecules via a peptide bond into polypeptide chains.

Depending on the number of the interconnected amino acids, we obtain chains of:

  • oligopeptides – a chain consists of 2-9 amino acids,
  • polypeptides – a chain consists of 10-100 amino acids,
  • proteins – a chain consists of more than 100 amino acids.

With age, the amount of natural peptides contained in the body decreases or their proper synthesis becomes damaged, and the metabolic and repair processes controlled by them gradually weaken and become disturbed.

In consequence, this process leads to lesions associated i.a. with the body’s aging process.

Biomimetic peptides – how do they work?

Biomimetic peptides are structurally similar to natural peptides naturally occurring in the human body. The amino acid sequence in biomimetic peptides is the same as in the natural peptides.

Because of that biomimetic peptides can act the same as natural peptides. Due to their structure, they have the ability to interact exactly where we want. This enables biomimetic peptides to perform the same functions and regulate cellular metabolism as effectively as natural peptides.

The advantage of using peptides in cosmetology is their stability in the skin care components formula. They are synthetically produced, which guarantees their excellent chemical and microbiological purity.

Peptides in cosmetology

Bio-mimetic peptides have a number of properties utilised in cosmetology: increasing the efficacies of any cosmetic and meso-formulations (also dermal fillers)

  • anti-aging,
  • anti-pigmentation,
  • stopping hair loss,
  • improving skin regeneration
  • anti-cellulite
  • decomposing body fat.
